Stemplayer.

A new medium to create and consume music.

All of the lights

A small, soft and almost meditative device - we set out to create something that looks, feels and operates like no musical tech product you’ve experienced before.

Each track loaded on the device is split into four stems; vocals, melody, drums and bass. The user slides their finger against the touch sensitive lights to isolate and remix part of a track. Within seconds you can transform a piece of music into something that sounds vastly different to the original, and change it back effortlessly with the touch of a button.

Plug & play

The team also created a web app where users can edit their track listing and device settings. We also implemented AI splitting technology that allows a user to upload a Youtube link and our site will split that track into 4 stems, ready for usage on device.

Handcrafted

The development process for Stemplayer was incredibly in-depth. We started with hand-modeled clay and foam, moving into 3D prints and in-house silicone casting, as seen above. I would say I’m now a professional mold-maker after this process!

A lot of our early process consisted of exploring squeezable and tactile objects, often inspired by nature. We explored concepts of devices syncing together and making the experience communal, as seen below.

Through the veil

For the launch of the Clear Stemplayer, I concepted and created a series of images playing around with the words ‘reveal’ and ‘conceal’. The reasoning behind this was to give this exclusive launch a secretive and precious feel, tying in with our thoughts of the device being an extension of the body.
